Extra interest in coldblack

Swiss textile technology group Schoeller has announced an increase in the adoption of its coldblack heat management and sun protection finish by cycling, running and triathlon apparel brands.

Blueseventy, Craft, Descente, De Soto, Endura, Epix Gear, Gore Bike Wear, Hincapie, Louis Garneau, Pearl Izumi, Roeckl, Running  Room, Skinfit, SLS3, Thoni Mara and Under Armour all offer clothing with coldblack now.

The technology reduces the absorption of the sun’s rays and improves heat management. This means that the wearer perspires less and therefore loses less liquid and vital minerals (including magnesium, potassium and iron). According to Schoeller, fluid loss of 2% of body weight due to perspiration reduces performance capacity by up to 20% and stamina and concentration can falter, whereas those
who perspire less feel better and remain fit for longer.

Comments the company has received from professional athletes such as Ironman competitor Sven Maier confirm this. He said: “One of the hardest parts of being an endurance athlete is maintaining balance in terms of temperature and fluid loss and the coldblack fabric provides a perfect solution.”

Light coloured garments reflect the sun’s rays and therefore absorb less heat. In contrast, dark fabrics absorb the rays and heat up. Coldblack technology reduces the absorption of sunlight; consequently, dark colours heat up less.
