$25 billion Indian market could open up for Bangladesh

Indian media have suggested that the country’s prime minister, Manmohan Singh, may make concessions on finished garment imports during trade talks with Bangladesh in September.

Reports say 48 categories of finished garments could be among 61 product categories removed from a protected goods list that India has, allowing it to charge duties on imports. With their removal from the list, duties on imports of the garment types would end and Bangladeshi manufacturers would have free access to the Indian market.

Sales of garments in India are estimated to be worth $25 billion a year.
