Fibre manufacturer Hyosung has claimed that added capacity from a newly opened factory in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, has made it the biggest spandex producer in the world.

The new factory, in the town of Araquari, joins spandex plants in South Korea, China, Turkey and Vietnam. Phase one of the Brazilian facility, in which Hyosung has invested $100,000, will give the company an extra output of 10,000 tonnes a year

Commenting on its reasons for making the investment, it said South American brands and retailers were asking for “production proximity” to allow them to achieve speed to market. It plans to increase spandex production at Araquari to 150,000 tonnes a year.
