New finish brings non-iron cotton clothes closer

Swiss textile chemicals manufacturer Clariant has partnered with cotton research and marketing organisation Cotton Incorporated to develop a new finish for cotton fabrics.

Clariant has said that laboratory and field tests of the resin-based foam finish application, Foam Eco Care, suggest it will make it possible for cotton fabric producers to achieve better results on wrinkle-free and non-iron fabrics, especially suitable for shirts and trousers.

As the name suggests, the finish is applied using foam, as opposed to pad technology, but Clariant has said the tensile strength and abrasion resistance of fabrics treated with the product will compare well with the performance of fabrics treated using pad technology. However, it claims foam technology can result in reduced use of energy and chemicals.

Senior Cotton Inc textile chemist Ken Greeson said at the time of the announcement: “This new process has major advantages over conventional pad application and we are sure it will be welcomed right across the industry.”

The two partners have worked together on the project for two years.
