One of the founders of the Vans footwear brand, James Van Doren, died at the age of 72 on October 12 after a long illness.

He co-founded Vans, originally known as the Van Doren Rubber Company, with his older brother Paul in 1966 in Anaheim, California and ran the company from 1976 to 1984, a period during which the brand went from single-store significance to prominence throughout the US, paving the way for it to become the global brand it is today.
