The chief executive of the American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA), Kevin Burke, told the 2011 World Footwear Congress in Rio de Janeiro that his organisation has encouraged politicians in the US to look differently at the footwear and apparel industry there.

Asked by a member of congress earlier this year about the value of the apparel and footwear sector in the US, Mr Burke’s team calculated the value at almost $340 billion for 2010. More precisely, the value of the apparel industry was $273 billion while footwear was worth $64 billion.

“We are a massive industry,” Mr Burke said, “putting $340 billion into the US economy. Last year, the automotive industry had sales of $175 billion, fruit and vegetables $100 billion, bottled water $15 billion and alcohol $270 billion.”
