Collector’s item from Manufrance

A retro shirt, in the style worn by its most iconic and successful team in the mid-1970s, will go on sale to fans of French football club Saint-Étienne in December.

Outdoor and sports retailer Manufrance, based in the city in central France that gave its name to the club, has launched the initiative, offering supporters a replica shirt in cotton and viscose in a special commemorative gift box for a price just short of EUR 60.

The shirt replicates the green with red, white and blue collar and sleeve trims that Saint-Étienne wore when it won the league in 1975 and became the first French club in 17 years to reach the European Cup final the following year. The club lost that final, played in Glasgow, by one goal to nil to Bayern Munich, but it won many friends for its fine display of attacking football.

With sales of the special shirt going ahead at the club’s official retail outlet, it seems that Saint-Étienne approves of the move. However, the commemorative shirt has not been made by current shirt supplier adidas or by Le Coq Sportif, the brand that supplied Saint-Étienne’s kit for the game in Glasgow. There is a connection though because at the time of the 1976 final Manufrance was an official club sponsor.
