Li Ning offers example to other Chinese brands, says Greenpeace

The inclusion of Chinese sports brand Li Ning as one of six major companies to sign up to a new roadmap on eliminating hazardous chemicals from the footwear and apparel supply chain by 2020 is an example for other Chinese companies to follow, according to campaign group Greenpeace.

Li Ning was one of a select group of sports brands and fashion retailers to make a joint announcement on November 21 detailing the next steps in their efforts to eliminate hazardous chemicals from the processes they and their partners use to make their products. The development is the result of a high-profile publicity campaign that Greenpeace launched in the summer of 2011.

Greenpeace’s campaign co-ordinator, Martin Hojsik, said: “As the first Chinese brand to commit to remove all hazardous chemicals from its supply chain and products and adopt the joint roadmap, Li-Ning is setting a clear precedent for all other Chinese brands to follow.”

Initial communication on the roadmap includes a Chinese translation of the joint statement the companies issued on November 21.
