US major league baseball player Ryan Howard and his family have donated $1.25 million in athletic wear to the School District of Philadelphia.

Philadelphia’s Mayor Nutter told local media: “This gift from The Ryan Howard Family Foundation is a great example of how individuals and institutions can contribute to the education of our students and root for them on the field. I would like to thank The Ryan Howard Family Foundation for reaching out and improving the quality-of-life for thousands of Philadelphia’s young people.”

The donated adidas gear includes athletic apparel and shoes. A total of 57 city schools will be able to match their new gear to their school colours. Four middle schools will also receive shoes.

Ron Howard, chairman of The Ryan Howard Family Foundation, said: “All of us at The Ryan Howard Family Foundation feel blessed that we are able to help the Philadelphia School District with this gift.”
