US surfer to test Quiksilver wetsuit

US professional surfer Kelly Slater is to test Quiksilver’s Xplosive Wetsuit at The Billabong Pipeline Masters on Hawaii’s North Shore.

The Xplosive Wetsuit, which Quiksilver says is its most innovative wetsuit with “unparalleled technical design”, will be tested by Kelly Slater as he competes in the final stop of the 2011 ASP World Title race. Mr Slater first wore the handmade and anatomically designed wetsuit in San Francisco in November.

The Quiksilver research and development team worked with sports physiotherapist Malcolm Browne to create a wetsuit that assists “explosive” movements, reacts to changes in position and aids control of major muscles; an important factor in reducing injury.

“The power lines have been designed to mimic the naturally-occurring stretch reflexes within the body,” says Mr Browne.  ”By adding these lines to the already established reflexes we can amplify the body response of action and reaction. This allows the athlete to move smoothly through all actions which are required by their sport but in a highly energised way. The athlete’s awareness of their body is both complemented and enhanced by the suit.”
