Slazenger misses out on Sydney triple-century glory

Sports brand Slazenger may regret its failure to renew a sponsorship deal with Australia's cricket captain, Michael Clarke.

A three-year deal between them ended on December 31, just before the start of the New Year test match at the Sydney Cricket Ground between Australia and India.

Using his existing Slazenger bats, but with all logos removed, Michael Clarke went on to score his best-ever total in the match, 329 not out. He became only the fourth Australian in history to score a triple century, and the first since Matthew Hayden achieved the feat in 2003.

It was the highest-ever score in a test match between India and Australia and the highest recorded in 100 test matches at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Slazenger told Australian media that it had pulled out of negotiations for a renewed contract because the player's demands were too high. In the wake of the triple century, the Sydney Morning Herald likened this decision to "quitting The Beatles in 1962".
