Across the world, companies made 76.7 million tonnes of fibre (of all kinds) last year, which the association says represents growth of 7.9% compared to 2010 and is an all-time high.
Of this, manmade fibres contributed 48.7 million tonnes, also a record according to the report and an 8.3% increase on the previous year. Breaking this figure down further, the Japan Chemical Fibers Association said, synthetic fibres represented 45.1 million tonnes and cellulosic fibres 3.5 million tonnes. Synthetic fibre production grew by 8.1% in 2011 compared to the previous year, while growth for cellulosic fibres was 10.5%.
Manmade fibres' share of total fibre production was 63.5%, similar to the level for 2010.
Turning to natural fibres, the report says cotton production grew by 7.7% to 26.8 million tonnes, while wool production is estimated to have increased only slightly in 2011, by 0.3%, to reach 1.1 million tonnes.
