US apparel imports up in value but down in volume

Increases in raw material costs led to a rise in the value of apparel imports into the US in 2011 of 9.2%. However, in terms of volume, imports fell by 2%.

According to the US Association of Importers of Textiles and Apparel, 95% of the clothing sold in the US is imported, with the total value of clothing imports in the year reaching $101.3 billion compared to $92.7 billion in 2010. However, in terms of square-metres, less fabric came into the country, the equivalent of 54 billion square-metres compared to 55.2 billion a year earlier.
