CITI calls for action on synthetic fibres in India

20/02/2012
The Confederation of Indian Textile Industries (CITI) has called on the government to remove a 10% tax on the production of synthetic fibres in India. Imports of synthetic fibres are currently subject to a duty of 9%, but the organisation said it would be happy for this protection to be removed if the 10% production tax disappeared.

D K Nair, secretary-general of CITI, told local media that these moves would lead to a fall in the price of textiles made from synthetic fibres. He pointed out that there are no similar restrictions on cotton fibre, but argued that this mostly benefits wealthier consumers, whereas a high cost for textiles and garments made from synthetic fibres affects poorer people more.
