India: minister calls cotton export ban “highly objectionable”

06/03/2012
Only a day after India’s government announced a ban on exports of cotton, agriculture minister, Sharad Pawar, has called the move “highly objectionable”, has said he knew nothing about it and has asked prime minister to reverse the decision.

In comments to media in New Delhi the day after the government announced its decision, Mr Pawar said: “I was kept in the dark on the issue and have requested the prime minister for revocation of the ban. Our production [of cotton] is higher this year and farmers are complaining of falling prices.”
