Dow Corning launches new water-repellent technology for sports apparel

12/03/2012
Silicon-based technology provider Dow Corning Textiles has said it believes a new emulsion product it is introducing to the market this spring will be of interest to global textile brand specifiers because it will enable them to equip sports and recreation apparel with high levels of water repellency and improved softness. Furthermore, it says the new product, DWR-7000 Soft Hydro Guard, will achieve this without the use of fluorine, solvents or alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEO).

Water repellency functionality from the new product will last more than 30 home laundry washes, the company said, equal to the durability offered by standard fluorocarbon water repellent finishing systems.

“Leading apparel companies are looking for innovative water repellency technologies that can provide eco-friendly solutions for their garments without sacrificing comfort,” said Joanna Giovanoli, marketing manager for Dow Corning Textiles, said at the time of the launch. “In contrast to current fluorocarbon technologies, silicon-based emulsions contain no fluorine, solvents or APEOs. Silicones used in this product exhibit no adverse toxicological effects or evidence of bioaccumulation and have no effects on soil-living species or on crop growth.”

Fernando Vazquez, Dow Corning global applications manager, will present this new product at the AATCC 2012 international conference in Charlotte, North Carolina, on March 21-23.
