Dow gets approval for Texas propylene plant

14/03/2012
The Dow Chemical Company has announced that its board of directors has authorised capital for a new, “world-scale” propylene production facility in Texas.

It says the new plant will benefit from “low-cost feedstock opportunities” that are available from increasing supplies of US shale gas and that the project will bring competitive advantage to its performance materials and advanced materials businesses. Propylene is the raw material for a variety of products, but two-thirds of what is produced at the moment goes towards making polypropylene.

Basic engineering work has started already and the project is on track for production start-up in 2015.
