Pakistan registers record cotton crop

15/03/2012
According to the Pakistan Cotton Ginners’ Association, cotton farmers across the country had harvested 14.4 million bales as of March 2012. Almost 13.5 million of those bales have already been sold in domestic or international markets, leaving stock of about one million bales.

This already represents the highest level of production in Pakistan's history, but the harvest could increase by a further 500,000 bales in the next month, taking total production for the 2011–2012 season above 15 million bales.

Sindh province has produced a substantially smaller crop (the difference is almost 30%) than last year, while the crop in Punjab is 51.9% higher than a year ago. The association attributes this to more widespread use in Punjab of genetically modified seed that seems to have stood up well to the conditions there.
