Cotton production in Mozambique reaches 85,000 tons in 2012
Mozambique is expected to produce 85,000 tons of cotton in the next agricultural campaign due to begin soon in Mozambique, according to the director of the Mozambican cotton Institute (IAM), Norberto Mahalambe.
The director of IAM said that measures taken by the government to increase production pointed to Mozambique having annual average production of 200,000 tons of raw cotton in ten years’ time.
In 2011 cotton production stood at around 71,000 tons allowing Mozambique to net $41 million in taxes.
In 2010 Mozambique produced 27,000 tons of cotton.
Cotton is grown in 20 districts focused in four of the six agricultural development areas in Mozambique.
