Fatalities in fire at chemical factory

Polymer manufacturer Evonik has issued a statement confirming that two of its workers have died in a fire at production facility on the Marl Chemicals Park in western Germany. The fire broke out on March 31 in a plant in which the company makes cyclododecatriene (CDT).

“We are deeply sorry that two members of our workforce lost their lives in the blaze,” the company said in the statement. “Evonik is supporting the authorities investigating the cause of the fire and has started its own examination through an independent expert.”

CDT is used to make laurolactam which, in turn, is used as a monomer in polyamide 12, so this part of Evonik’s production has been severely affected by the incident and Evonik said it expected “substantial constraints” in its ability to provide supplies of CDT-based products.

“We are nonetheless confident that we will be able to provide alternative solutions,” it added.
