New Tommy Hilfiger line aims to end poverty

US sportswear brand Tommy Hilfiger is teaming up with international non-profit organisation Millennium Promise on a collection aimed to help end poverty.

“I’m proud to say that 100% of the proceeds from The Promise Collection will be donated to the Millennium Villages project,” said designer Tommy Hilfiger. “In order to engage our customers and have full transparency, we are even giving them a chance to track, online, how their purchases directly affect a person or village in Ruhiira, Uganda.”

Inspired by African prints and a bright colour palette, the collection features classic pieces that were either designed with locally sourced cotton or created in Africa. “Throughout my trip to Uganda, I was very inspired by the local colours of the native dress – the blues, greens, yellows and reds – and the landscapes. The fabrics of the spring-summer capsule collection are lightweight and breathable, which is perfect for the season, and a nod to the warm African climate,” said Mr Hilfiger. “We’ve recreated our classic preppy styles – polos and cotton camp shirts, shorts, wrap skirts, swimwear and dresses – with African colours, prints and motifs. On some of the items the African influence is in the detailing and on others it’s more overt.”
