High prices slow apparel sales in China

Chinese consumers continued to spend more money on branded apparel in 2011, but growth in the sector there was at its lowest level in ten years.

According to the China National Commercial Information Centre, “accelerated growth of branded apparel prices” last year affected sales volumes and large-scale clothing retailers sold only 4.4% more clothes than they did in 2010. Growth in the previous year was 10.1%.

Higher prices, calculated at 20.3% year on year on average, led to growth in retail sales figures, which were calculated to have been 10% higher overall than in 2010.

The same source also highlighted that large fashion retailers, including H&M and Zara, are focusing on second- and third-tier cities for much of their growth in China now.
