US retail giant Target is to open a store in San Francisco that is entirely devoted to sportswear.

The C9 Active Apparel store will open at the Metreon building Mission and Fourth streets on October 14.

The 3,000 square-foot store will stock men's and women's exercise clothing and accessories such as yoga mats and water bottles, which are produced exclusively for the chain by North Carolina-based sportswear and underwear manufacturer HanesBrands.

Company spokesperson Joshua Thomas said the store will suit the Californian city’s "active consumer segment", but did not confirm rumours that this store was a trial that could lead to more activewear-dedicated Target outlets.
