SACTWU in wage dispute with cotton companies

12/06/2012

The Southern African Clothing & Textile Workers Union (SACTWU) has announced that it is locked in a wage dispute with cotton firm bosses.

According to reports, employers have offered a 5.5% wage increase for its workers, with a reduction in the starting minimum wage by 20%.

While the proposed increase has been welcomed, SACTWU is pushing for a 7.5% wage rise.

The dispute has been referred to the National Textile Bargaining Council (NTBC) for processing.

If an agreement cannot be reached, the union may initiate strike action involving almost 5,000 textile workers in 52 factories.
