Historic Spanish football club launches its own sportswear brand

With multi-million dollar shirt deals hard to come by outside the elite levels of football, Spanish club Real Avilés has taken matters into its own hands.

Founded in 1903, Real Avilés is the oldest club in the autonomous community of Asturias in the north of the country but following serious economic difficulties in recent years is now under new ownership and plays in the third division.

In the face of its struggles to secure an attractive enough deal with kit suppliers, the club’s new owners decided to set up their own sports clothing brand instead. Called RANG, from the club’s full legal name, Real Avilés Nueva Gestión (the last two words mean ‘new management’), the brand will engage mostly local textile firms to make the shirts, socks and shorts first-team players will wear during matches as well as replica shirts for supporters.

Asturian firm Mazcatu will manufacturer the first-team kit.

Club director,
José Luis Rodríguez, said on announcing the development: “I think this is something positive for the club. This is our own brand, something that belongs to the club and will enrich it.”
