Bio-based materials to become more popular
28/06/2012
Speaking at a recent industry conference, Michael Carus, managing director of Nova-Institut, a German-based consultancy specialising in renewable resources, said current production levels were between 700,000 and 800,000 tonnes per year across the globe, with bio-PE, starch blends, PLA, PHA and bio-polyesters all contributing.
He said that bio-based plastic now acounts for around 7.5% of the overall polymers market, but added that this market-share will grow as manufacturers of polymers, fibres, yarns, fabrics and finished products strive to use fewer fossil resources and reduce their carbon emissions. He said the average carbon-emission saving that companies can achieve by moving from fossil resource-based plastic to bio-plastic is between 20% and 30%.
