New shorts, please, for Andy Murray

Sports brand adidas has blamed human error for a fault in tennis shorts that cost Wimbledon hopeful Andy Murray two points in a third-round match at the 2012 tournament on June 30.

Three times during the match against Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus, a spare tennis ball fell out of the pocket of Andy Murray’s shorts during play. In keeping with the rules on “hindrance during play”, the umpire ordered the point to be replayed the first time. On the two subsequent occasions, however, he awarded the point to the Cypriot player. This happened at key points in the middle of the match, which Andy Murray eventually won by three sets to one.

Asked about it in post-match interviews, the Scottish player said he hadn’t done anything differently in putting the spare ball in his pocket. “It wan’t my fault,” he said.

Later, adidas said in a statement that the pockets on its Barricade shorts had been finished by hand and that, in error, had been made too shallow.
Andy Murray opted to wear a longer version, the Barricade Bermuda shorts, for his fourth-round match against Marin Cilic of Croatia on July 2.
