Brazilian authorities ask for Chinese help to set up new textiles cluster

A delegation of investors from China visited the Brazilian state of Bahia in mid-July to look at possible new joint ventures.

Eduardo Salles, state secretary for agriculture, said afterwards that he had real hope that a new textile project would be one of the outcomes. He said: “We are the second-largest producer of cotton in Brazil, with high-quality fibre. We also have an excellent rate of productivity here. But in spite of that, there is no real textile industry presence in Bahia. We want to make more of our natural resources and create jobs and wealth.”

At the head of the Chinese delegation was the vice-president of the provincial government of Chnogqing, Hu Jiankan, whom Mr Salles asked to encourage Chinese companies to help set up a new textiles cluster in Bahia as joint-venture partners of Brazilian companies.
