Egyptian Olympic committee blames Chinese distributor for fake clothing

The chairman of Egypt’s Olympic committee, general Mahmoud Ahmed Ali, has blamed a distributor in China for providing fake tracksuits and accessories for the 112 athletes representing the African country at London 2012.

He said Egypt had opted to source the goods from China for cost reasons, saying Egypt could not afford the expense of up to $500 per athlete that major sports brands’ gear would cost. That the goods had arrived bearing unofficial Nike and adidas logos were the fault of the company in China, he said.

In the wake of the controversy, Nike told The Washington Post that its main concern was the Egyptian athletes had been given sub-standard products.
