Rockywoods produces first recycled nylon fabric
Rockywoods Fabrics, a US-based fabric distributor for use in outdoor gear and
clothing, has launched a new recycled nylon.
The new fabric, regenTM 210D Coated Recycled Nylon Fabric, reuses
discarded nylon products
such as fishing nets, turning them into nylon filament yarns. According to the
company, every 2,200 pounds of regen 210D made reduces atmospheric CO2
emissions by 4,600 pounds compared with the standard virgin nylon fabric
process. It claims that it would take 125 50-year-old deciduous trees a whole
year to absorb this amount of CO2.
Bill Szmyd, Rockywoods vice-president of operations, said: "Rockywoods is delighted to be able to offer a environmentally friendly product that has the same quality and performance as virgin nylon fabrics. In addition to reducing greenhouse gases, recycled nylon also reduces marine and landfill waste.
"For
years Rockywoods has been asked by its customers for a wide range of recycled
nylon fabrics. People like the idea of not sending everything to the
landfill.
"This
initial fabric offering can be used for bags, purses, backpacks, linings, dust
covers, and lots of light duty waterproof protection gear.
"Rockywoods
can see offering recycled nylon fabric in a variety of different weight fabrics
and finishes over time."
