Uniqlo partners Toray for Novak Djokovic-inspired tennis line

Japanese retailer Uniqlo has launched a range of tennis apparel created for Novak Djokovic, the world's top-ranked male tennis player.

The range features warm-up jackets and pants, shirts, shorts and accessories and will “closely resemble the look and feel of the performance wear that Mr Djokovic will wear at the 2012 US Open Tournament”, according to the company.

The launch in US stores coincides with the start date of the US Open – August 27.

Naoki Takizawa, Uniqlo's creative director, was involved in designing the apparel for Mr Djokovic. "My inspiration for the very first designs came from Mr Djokovic himself. In fact, it was the national flag of Serbia that inspired me when I started to think about the colour and the design of his match wear," he said.

"Regarding the fabric, I chose the newest product from Toray Industries, which is a close partner of Uniqlo and which specialises in creating innovative fabrics. When designing clothing such as performance wear what is important is that the fabric absorbs perspiration and dries quickly, while ensuring player comfort even in extreme match conditions," Takizawa added.

Mr Djokovic said: "The Uniqlo creative team understands the importance of achieving the right balance of these elements so that my performance wear can support my movement on the court and give me an extra boost of confidence when aiming for my points."

The tennis line, which encompasses 10 products, will be available in other markets around the world at a later date.
