JD Sports sells England rugby kit brand

Canterbury recently won the contract for England’s rugby kit from long-time supplier Nike.
JD’s majority shareholder, Pentland, will now take over its £22.7m debt.
Strong sales in New Zealand and Australia during the Rugby World Cup helped Canterbury’s results but weak fashionwear demand in Europe took it to an overall loss last year.
JD Sports said: "The board continues to believe that Canterbury is a significant brand development opportunity and that the recent four-year deal with the Rugby Football Union to be its official kit partner will further enhance the reputation and penetration of the Canterbury brand."
