Glen Raven announces new plant for UV-protective fabric

28/08/2012
US-based performance fabrics manufacturer Glen Raven has announced plans to build a new plant in Burlington, North Carolina, for production of its Sunbrella fabrics.

Sunbrella is a range of fabrics woven with specialty yarn colours and constructions for outdoor applications including awnings and furnishings for boats. The Skin Cancer Foundation in the US has recognised the fabrics as an aid in the prevention of sun-induced damage to the skin.

The new operation represents a $10 million investment, the company said, and is the result of increased demand for the products. The new plant will be located in an existing facility that formerly operated as Glen Raven’s Ultra Spun division. It will be equipped with the automated yarn manufacturing systems and configured for “high levels of flexibility and customisation”. The projected completion date is late summer 2013.

Glen Raven will employ 80 people at the site, including 30 new positions.
