Nike to replace Umbro for England football kit

03/09/2012
England football team’s kit will be made by Nike from next year, ending the club’s longstanding allegiance with Umbro.

Umbro has supplied the team since the 1950s, apart from between 1974 and 1988 when UK-based Admiral Sportswear took over the contract.

Nike is expected to launch a new away kit next spring, even though Umbro’s £20 million-a-year deal officially runs to 2018.

UK-based Umbro, a subsidiary of Nike, has lost a number of big contracts recently, including Manchester City’s kit, also to Nike, which was worth £6 million.

Nike announced it was putting Umbro up for sale in May to focus on its namesake brand, as well as Hurley, Converse and Jordan.
