Apparel firms concerned over unrest in Bangladesh

In June, more than 300 factories near the capital Dhaka were shut for almost a week until the government and factory owners promised to consider workers' pay demands.
Consultancy firm McKinsey & Company has said Bangladesh could double its garments exports in the next 10 years. But besides pay levels, working conditions and safety standards are often poor, employees and some analysts have said.
Zaidi Sattar, chairman of the Policy Research Institute of Bangladesh, said: "Wages have to rise, commensurate with productivity and inflation. There is also much to be done on improving working conditions. This is improving slowly, as more and more factories reach compliance standards."
