Adidas extends River Plate sponsorship until 2018

The iconic Buenos Aires club made negative headlines around the world in 2011 when it was relegated from the top flight for the first time in its history amid rioting among its supporters. However, on-field performance picked up in the second division and River won promotion back to the first division at the first attempt.
News of an extension to its long-standing sponsorship arrangement with adidas, which will now run until December 2018, will have given the club extra cause for celebration.
Adidas first supplied shirts to River Plate in 1982 and the sequence is unbroken since. In world football, only two teams, the German national team and that country’s top club, Bayern Munich, have work adidas shirts for longer.
Walter Koll, president of adidas Argentina, said on announcing the news: “The extension of the contract with River Plate confirms our long-term successful relationship. We are proud to sponsor the club and continue this partnership.”
