Hohenstein tracks down sweat odours on fabric

Textile experts at the Hohenstein Institute in Germany have been examining the interactions between clothing and sweat and the absorption of the molecules by various fabrics.

The scientists 'mark' the sweat odour molecules as radioactive and can then track the tiniest traces on the textiles. This enables them to quantify precisely how much of the sweat odour remains on the fibre.

Specially-trained experts are also using their olfactory senses combined with state-of-the-art technology to determine precisely the odour threshold of cotton, wool and polyester fibres.

The results will be published in a scientific journal in the near future.

"Our study shows that specific treatments can have a crucial influence on the absorption behaviour of textiles as regards their sweat odour," said Dr Timo Hammer, scientific manager of the department.
