Patagonia improves Capilene

Outdoor brand Patagonia has announced improvements to its proprietary polyester with hydrophilic finish baselayer collection, Capilene.

The new version, Capilene 4, is made from fabric that manufacturer Polartec is supplying exclusively to Patagonia. The brand says that, compared to previous versions, Capilene 4 offers a 30% reduction in weight, a 90% increase in air permeability and a 24% increase in warmth-to-weight ratio.

Patagonia-sponsored climber Tommy Caldwell said that after field-testing a quarter-zip hoodie in the new material he had come to favour it as a key component of his layering system. He liked it so much that he asked Patagonia to make baselayer bottoms in the same fabric.
