Hope for clothing and textiles in Mozambique

21/09/2012
The apparel industry in Mozambique could be on the verge of a revival.

Textile and clothing production in the south-east African country almost collapsed in the 1990s, but now reports from local news sources say there are 20 factories in operation, even if most of them are functioning well below full capacity.

At the end of the 1980s there were 78 textile and clothing factories in the country, but a lack of innovation and cheap imports from Asia led to widespread closures. Some operators, such as Texlom in Matola and Textafrica in Chimoio, had been important employers in their regions.

Over the past two years, the Office for Accelerated Development Economic Areas (GAZEDA) has received six proposals for new textile and clothing factories in industrial free zones and special economic zones that the government has set up. One new factory is already under construction in the central province of Sofala.
