Change is coming to EU regulations on antimicrobial treatment

25/09/2012
New regulations on biocidal products will come into force in the European Union a year from now. The European Parliament and Council has published (EU) regulation number 528/2012 on the supply of biocidal products to the market and their use in the European Union’s Official Journal, making the development official. It will come into force on September 1, 2013 and will replace the former EU Directive 98/8/EU.

Textiles with an antimicrobial treatment are among the products considered to be biocidal. Manufacturers who produce within the EU and manufacturing and trading companies who import products from non-EU countries and distribute them there will be subject to the regulation. For them to qualify for a simplified approval process to sell or distribute their products, they will have to provide evidence of effectiveness.

One of the organisations that can carry out the necessary testing for the approval process is the Hohenstein Institute in Bönnigheim, Germany.
