Lenzing launches spun-dyed Modal

Fibre company Lenzing has launched spun-dyed Modal which it says is eco-friendly, cost effective and can reduce time to market.

Initially available in four colours, the processes are being developed to increase variety and to make it suitable for more applications.

“The first aim was to develop a fibre for underwear and socks,” Varga Ksenija, a lead researcher at Lenzing, told sportstexiles.com. “After three years of trials, it was proved that these Modal fibres can be processed on different yarn spinning systems and have very good washing performance.

“The next stage was to develop different colours - marine blue, gold beige and red. We extended the application to home textiles like bed linen and we developed it for automotive uses.”

She explained that the fabric produced by spun-dyed Modal needs less energy and resources than fabric produced by conventional dyeing processes. “CO2 emissions are also very important – there are a lot of gases produced by conventional dying processes,“ she added.

Lenzing is currently developing additional colours, including pink, brown and green.

“The fibres have good colour fastness, which is important for customers, and good properties like rub fastness,” said Ms Ksenija.
Another benefit is that because it does not have to go through a separate dyeing stage, the fabrics could be quicker to market.

“When we look at the price of the final product like fabric, the spun-dyed Modal is less expensive because you’re saving on the dyeing, saving energy and saving water," she added.

Lenzing Modal Color is produced in an eco-friendly process using beechwood. It is carbon neutral and up to 95% of processing chemicals are recovered during production.
