Four-layer suit helps Baumgartner break records

Austrian BASE jumper Felix Baumgartner completed a record-breaking jump from more than 39,000 metres after flying to the edge of space in a helium-filled balloon on October 14. He also broke the records for the highest manned balloon flight and for unassisted speed, reaching 1,342.8 kilometres per hour during his freefall of four minutes 20 seconds. Millions of people around the world watched his ascent and jump live on television broadcasts and live stream on the internet.

A suit designed by Massachusetts-based David Clark Company was an integral part of the feat.

The suit had four layers: an innermost comfort liner, a gas membrane that retains air pressure, a restraint layer that gives the suit its shape, and a fire retardant exterior cover that provides protection and insulation from extreme heat and cold. A smart valve automatically adjusted during the fall so that the suit maintained a pressure equivalent to that found at 10,500 metres.
