Sports Direct, Britain's biggest sporting goods retailer, has reported an 18% rise in sales as customers kitted out children for a return to school, and on the back of ‘Olympic fever’.

The group, which owns Sports Direct.com and Lillywhites stores as well as Slazenger, Lonsdale and Dunlop, said group total sales in the nine weeks to September 30 had risen to £402.7 million pounds, up from £341.3 million a year ago.

Gross profit in the period rose 21.7% to £167.4 million, with the firm adding that trading since September had remained strong. Sports retail sales grew 16.8% to £344.7 million.

The decline and recent closure of high street rival JJB Sports has no doubt also helped the company. In October Sports Direct bought 20 of the beleaguered group’s stores
