REI appoints chief operating officer

REI (Recreational Equipment Inc), a US-based outdoor gear and apparel retailer, has named Brian Unmacht as chief operating officer, expanding his role to oversee retail, ecommerce, merchandising, private brands, IT and supply chain.

Mr Unmacht started at REI as a store supervisor in 1986, rising through retail management to leadership roles, including regional district manager, director of retail operations and senior-vice president of retail. In 2008, he was named executive vice-president of sales, service, store development and logistics.

"This well-deserved promotion recognises Brian's many contributions to our success and growth over the course of his 26-year career at REI," said Sally Jewell, president and CEO.

Mr Unmacht also serves as vice-chairman of the board for the Outdoor Industry Association.

REI was founded in 1938 and includes 127 stores, two websites, REI and Novara gear and apparel, and REI Adventures, an adventure travel company.
