It is hoped it will help grow the region’s textile sector, which is forecast to expand by 21% between now and 2017.
CETI is in Phase 1 of its configuration, during which the focus will be on a high-tech spinning tool, supporting the development of the high-performance fibres. Phase 2, scheduled for 2013/2014, will focus on the manufacturing process, primarily for the composite and technical textile markets, including knitting, weaving and plaiting.
In terms of sports and activewear, its main areas of focus will be intelligent textile technologies for customising training with equipment for monitoring athletes; and sense perception technologies for improving the impression and perceived quality of manufactured products, such as the use of phase change materials or microcapsules to regulate body temperature.
