New leaders move in at Polartec

Performance fabrics manufacturer Polartec has announced the appointment of Gary Smith as its new chief executive officer, and of Joe Robinson as its new chief financial officer.

Mr Smith was previously president of the Outdoor Group for Timberland, and also worked as a partner at management consultancy firm McKinsey & Company. He describes himself as a passionate cyclist and avid mountaineer. He took over from Andy Vecchione on November 1; Mr Vecchione announced in July that he was stepping aside after five years in charge, and eight years in total at Polartec.

Executive vice-president, Jon Adelman, remains in post and will form a new leadership team with Gary Smith and Joe Robinson.

Mr Robinson has held a number of senior finance positions in big corporations, including that of vice-president for global finance at Converse.

Gregory Segall, chief executive of Polartec’s parent company, Versa Capital Management, said on announcing the new appointments: “We are delighted to attract an executive with Gary’s business acumen, strategic perspective and operational experience to Polartec as the chief executive. The board is highly confident that the new senior management team, working with Polartec’s dedicated employees in North America and around the world, will continue the company’s successful growth trajectory and capitalise on its many strengths and competitive advantages, including its leading edge product portfolio and world-class customers.”

He thanked Andy Vecchione for his years of service and success with Polartec and for assisting with the leadership transition, saying the outgoing chief executive’s knowledge of Polartec and its industry, and his continuing interests as a shareholder and senior advisor with the board, positions him to be “a valuable contributor going forward”.
