Government backs plan to rebuild UK textile industry
02/11/2012
At a conference in London today - A new dawn: rebuilding the UK’s textile industry - representatives from all parts of the industry will gather to discuss ways to go about this, with Mr Cable giving the keynote speech.
The hope is that the UK can attract clothing companies base their manufacturing facilities there, with costs of labour in China rising.
The industry has been on the decline for many years, with figures reported by UK-based publication The Financial Times indicating that the number of jobs in the sector has fallen from 800,000 in 1980 to 100,000.
Michael Davis, CEO of the UK Commission for Employment Skills; Cheryl Kindness, development director at Camira Fabrics; and Bill Macbeth, managing director of the Textile Centre for Excellence, are also among speakers.
