“Invisible” thread could help combat counterfeiting

A new type of thread is being developed at a university in Sweden, which is claimed could put an end to counterfeit goods as it is woven into patterns invisible to the naked eye.

An article in UK-based publication The New Scientist says Christian Müller of Chalmers University of Technology has made a semi-transparent thread from polyethylene and a polymer that can be used in clothes dye, and which can reveal patterns when lit with polarised light.

He says it could be used in the fight against counterfeiting to add ‘invisible’ logos to clothing and articles. He is also looking to make similar threads for use in electronically enhanced textiles that change colour with electric voltage.
