Outdoor brands choose Polartec’s new insulation fibre

14/11/2012
Performance fabric manufacturer Polartec has launched a synthetic insulation fibre, designed for and tested by the US Special Operations Forces and to be launched at trade shows in January.

The company describes Polartec Alpha as “a highly stable layer allowing for the use of more open and breathable fabrics on the outer and inner layers of puffy style garments”. It insulates while wet and offers quick drying, breathability and vapour transport. Highly compressible, it also provides wind resistance and warmth.

Polartec Alpha jackets are in production and are being offered to every US Special Forces operator. They will be introduced at the January 2013 Outdoor Retailer show, as well as the SnowSports Industries America and ISPO trade events, and will be available to consumers by next September.

Allon Cohne, Polartec director of marketing, said: “Polartec Alpha is a natural complement to our existing layering system fabrics. It will function as outerwear or as an ideal mid layer under fabrics like Polartec Power Shield Pro or Polartec NeoShell. It packs small and can quickly recover from getting completely soaked.”

Brands adopting Polartec Alpha for the initial launch include 66º North, Eddie Bauer, Eider, Mammut, Marmot, Rab, and The North Face.
