Pro-tec, a maker of protective gear for extreme sports, has been sold to US-based Dye Precision as it can provide a “better operational fit”, according to previous owner Vans.

Pro-Tec came under the footwear company’s umbrella a decade ago
which in turn is part of the group that owns North Face and Timberland – and will celebrate its 40th year in 2013. Dye Precision has grown to be one of the biggest manufacturers of paint balling equipment, a sport which Pro-Tec supplies helmets to.

Dave DeHaan, CEO of Dye Precision, said: “The core of our company’s strength is our commitment to innovation in the sports we participate in. We have made a strong impact in the snow and paintball industry, and the acquisition of the Pro-tec brand accelerates our planned expansion into skateboarding, BMX, snow protective and mountain biking.”

Kevin Bailey, president of Vans, said: “We’re very proud of the work that the Vans and Pro-tec teams have done to build the brand globally during the last decade. We have continued the Pro-tec brand’s leadership role in skateboard and BMX protective gear while expanding the brand’s position in snow sports and mountain biking. But we believe that Dye Precision can provide Pro-tec a better operational fit and focus, which will allow the brand to thrive and reach its full potential.”
